Update: We’ve published a rundown of our thoughts on what Call of Duty 2020 might be, based on how Activision Blizzard has talked about the upcoming first-person shooter. Our original story continues below.
In an unsurprising move that everyone saw coming, Blizzard confirmed that, yes, a brand-new Call of Duty game will release sometime this year. However, the publisher has not yet confirmed which of its studios is developing the game.
Interestingly, the company said that this year’s Call of Duty won’t sell as well as last year’s Modern Warfare did during its launch window. No details on platforms were shared, leaving us to wonder if it will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, which will both release in the vicinity of the new CoD.
In last week’s earnings call, Activision Blizzard spoke a bit about Modern Warfare’s success, celebrating the game’s “double-digit percentage” increase over 2018’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. While Activision Blizzard didn’t provide specific numbers about Modern Warfare’s success, the company said this year’s “premium Call of Duty” title, which is expected to arrive sometime between October 1-December 31, will not perform as well as the Modern Warfare reboot did during the same period last year.
In December 2019, Activision Blizzard announced that Modern Warfare generated $1 billion in revenue worldwide, players spent more than 500 million hours in multiplayer, and nearly 300 million matches have been played. Modern Warfare was also December’s best-selling game in the US and 2019’s best-selling game in the US. Black Ops 4 took the ninth spot as the decade’s best-selling game in the US.
Modern Warfare Season 2 launched on February 11 and introduces a new battle pass and a variety of free content, including the return of the Rust map from Modern Warfare 2. Not everything will be available right at launch, but there is a lot of content launching on Tuesday. For a rundown on what’s changed, check out the Season 2 patch notes.
